Lelong.com.my or Lelong.my, under Interbase Resources S/B, was founded by Wei Kwok Seing and Richard Tan in 1998, is one of the oldest and largest eCommerce websites in Malaysia. Lelong started as an auction site and later evolved into B2C marketplace, where sellers can open their store and sell products. It is now a popular Malaysian both fixed price and auction site, offering all types of goods, from handphones, computers, cameras, fashions, jewellery etc.
Lelong has approximate 6000 active sellers offering almost one million products, six million visitors every month and yearly transaction of RM130 million to RM150 million (data collected in 2014). On top of Lelong, Interbase Resources S/B also owns other eCommerce websites that you might have heard of such as Superbuy.my (still active), Groupme.my (under "remodeling" as of Nov 2016), Pretty.my (now under Lelong subdirectory), Clo.my (now redirect to pretty.my) etc, and Zuperklik.com (now closed) for Indonesia market.
In recent years, Lelong is aggressively providing training classes at various cities in Malaysia to attract more sellers to its platform. Class 101 is a free class introducing Lelong to potential sellers. Class 102 is for Lelong sellers.
From buyer perspective: Lelong is a shopping heaven, you can find many things here just like shopping in physical malls, and with good prices! Lelong has a long list of product categories with thousands of products in each category. Surprisingly, "House & Property" is one of the categories, which you might not purchase online!
Personally, I think Lelong website needs a facelift to have a modern look. Lelong website is still not fully responsive for mobile devices but we can see that they are continuously improving it. When you browse Lelong website with mobile devices such as handphone or tablet, some pages are responsive but some not, which is kind of confusing. However, I downloaded Lelong Android apps and I find it works very well!

To reduce fraud to a minimum rate, Lelong is taking few steps such as getting copies of MyKad, business registration documents and verification through phone with sellers. When a buyer pays with Netpay at Lelong and not receiving products after 30 days, the Lelong's buyer protection program covers buyer up to RM1,000. So as a buyer, you should use Netpay to checkout products. It can be more difficult to get your money back if you transfer fund directly to the seller.
Lelong's Netpay is fast in payback money to sellers. If your weekly sales is above RM100, Netpay will pay back your sales on weekly basis too. This is good cash flow for small business owners.
Good news for sellers with large quantity of products: Enter your product information into Excel and save under CSV format. Lelong provides bulk upload capability so you can upload large quality of product with just click!
However, Lelong does not enforce quality product images and content. You can find images with all types of background colours and watermark, products without description, hot linking to external images etc. This created perceptions that Lelong marketplace enforces lower quality control standard.
Lelong is a marketplace that gives sellers a lot of flexibilities such as selection of checkout payment and shipment methods. Sellers can user interbank transfer, Paypal or Netpay. Sellers can use any preferred courier services PosLaju, SkyNet, GDex etc. For seller signed up before Dec 2014 / early 2015, there is no commission charged when buyer pay with interbank transfer.
Lelong increases yearly subscription fees from time to time. But once you sign up, the yearly subscription fees is locked. So those veteran sellers have the advantage of operating cost at Lelong. In fact, Lelong also started to impose transaction fees based on product category. So if you want to sell at Lelong, sign up early ya.
Unlike many other marketplaces, Lelong allows buyer and seller communicate freely via internal or external email system. This helps buyer and seller set good expectations before any transactions.
As a major eCommerce website for so many years, to my surprise, Lelong still don't have Helpdesk Ticketing system. Sellers and buyers can only send emails to Lelong. Without such tracking system for management to measure the performance of support staff, you might not get the reply for your urgent issues, or answers come very late.
Overall, if you want to buy and sell products, Lelong is an excellent marketplace. Hope Lelong will continue to improve in future.
